Crime categories

Every crime category the platform tracks, with its definition, what it includes, and the category ID to use when filtering by category in the API.

26 categories across 3 groupings.

Category IDs come from the platform itself

IDs on this page are read from the live category list, not transcribed. Pass these when filtering API calls by category.

Severity weighting

Categories are not weighted equally. Severity is weighted heavily, so a location with a few serious violent incidents scores above one with a high volume of minor offenses — a homicide moves a score far more than a case of vandalism. The exact per-category weighting is proprietary.

A category can be flagged Violent, Property, both, or neither. Robbery is both — it takes property using force. Categories flagged as neither sit under Regulatory Offenses.
